terrible welcome committee

I was chatting with Brandon today and have decided that Ryan and I  make a terrible welcoming committee and I’m surprised Trevor’s mom didn’t make him go back home after meeting us. Ryan claims to have made a bad impression and I am acerbic and insulted Idaho a lot. Oh, well. We’re actually really nice, I promise!

I was exhausted yesterday so I got home and laid down, then went to Farm Fresh with Amanda and Iseley to buy some foodstuffs. Bought two 2-liter Mountain Dew, lots of cereal, milk, and couldn’t find Pop Tarts, so I tried to make myself feel better with some Oreos. It worked.
Got back home and went to sleep, and pretty much stayed that way until morning.

This morning, Kat (my fellow intern) and I had a meeting with the big safety guy, Jose, who gave us more info about what they want from us. Pretty much reiteration of what I already knew, but they also suggested we update the look of the website. My area of expertise! I’m excited because their site is pretty blah.

Lunch was later than I figured (Amanda arrived at 12.30ish instead of noon) and I had to sit by myself (instead of sitting by Ryan) for a few minutes until I noticed Iseley and Trevor across the way. Had fun at lunch. Met up with Matt, whom I’d met on Facebook a few weeks ago, so I was stoked.

After lunch, some socializing (I went to see Amanda’s workplace) and chatting with mentor, then looking over the website and thinking of inspiration and ideas for my project. Now everyone else in the office has left and I’m here by myself for at least 40 more minutes.

Tonight, some people have volleyball (lol) so I’m not sure what we’ll be doing for fun or if we’ll even be doing fun things. fun.

I’m drowning in air!

I always seem to forget how freaking HUMID it is in Virginia. And bright and sunny. And the air is thick with low altitude. Makes me miss being at home with snow on the mountains. Remind me of that when I go home and complain about snow in June. I’ve had to do quite a bit of walking today, too.

I forgot my badge (already) and had to go to Badge & Pass to get a temporary badge, which sucks because the line is long due to all the students needing their badges. But I got the badge and walked to my office, sweaty and overheated by the time I got there. Spent some time researching safety campaigns, then went to lunch at noon-ish.

The walk to the Caf is super long this year. Last summer, I walked down the street and I was there. This time, walking takes about 10-15 minutes. Bleh. And the bread for sandwiches hasn’t been good in the last two days. AND they raised the price of Mtn Dew. I’ll have to start getting the 12oz because it’s a better deal. Dumb, btw. Smaller isn’t supposed to be cheaper. That’s why there are those stores where you buy 100 rolls of toilet paper and stuff. Anyway. I’ll survive.

Had fun last night. We went over to visit Ryan and his roommates (who I probably have to refer to by name now since we’ve become acquainted and I’ve insulted them enough…I’ll start over.)

Had fun last night. We went over to visit Ryan, Trevor, and Jake, and their pizza. I was hungry and they had free pizza. Mmm…free mediocre pizza. They had an awesome house that was well on its way to retro instead of just old and tacky. We all learned that I’m loud and kind of rude.
But jokingly. Like my dad says; “I tease you because I love you.” I didn’t actually say that, though. I just met these people. I don’t love them. I merely like them.
But we had fun chatting  until midnightish.
Went home. Tried to sleep. Failed until past 3.30, then somehow woke up at 6. Tried to sleep again. Took another shower, then slept for a few minutes, and headed to work. Apparently, I’ve become known for my constant tardiness because when we went to pick up Trevor and Jake, they were, like, “Ryan said if you guys were late it was Brittany’s fault.” *facepalm*

Anyway. Work. I did some research then brainstormed. Got my permanent ID, which I will totally remember every day this summer. And not lose. Totally!

I’m exhausted now. Ready to go home and take a nap, then maybe more fun tonight? I like fun. I’m a fun, exciting person. FUN! whee!

I’m done.

Borientation and introductions

Today was the first official day of the LARSS program. Yay!

But first…this weekend.

Saturday morning, my flight left at 8.30am, so I stayed up all night (too excited for sleep) and left bright and early so I’d have plenty of time to go through all necessary security measures and board my flight on time. Resisted telling a security man that my bones are made of adamantium like Wolverine and avoided joking about having spear-like objects or explosives. Lesson: Don’t joke with people who can tase you.

My first flight was from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas. I got to sit next to a very large man with tattoos. Fortunately he didn’t smell and the flight was very short. The flight wasn’t bad considering the size of my seatmate. The best part of the flight was my 3 for 3 record on in-flight trivia. I am the trivia master.

My second and longest leg was Vegas to Atlanta, at almost four hours. I tried to sleep but there were two women who chatted loudly the entire time. Managed to sleep for about an hour total, I’d imagine.

Finally, I got to go from ATL to Newport News, my home for the summer. I sat down next to a baby and was very worried, but the kid slept for the entire flight. I was envious.

Got out of the plane and got my awesome pink suitcase. Amanda picked me up and I then proceeded to sleep for approximately 14 hours. Woke up and met my roommates but went back to bed.
Yesterday afternoon, I was a good kid and unpacked my suitcases for the summer. Took a shower in our mediocre tub and went to bed.

This morning was borientation which wasn’t nearly as boring as last year (the NDA lady pronounced proprietary properly this year), then met my mentor and had a mediocre sandwich from The Caf.

I then got to meet everyone in my building (whose names I won’t remember for weeks) and got my computer set up but not logged in–I don’t remember my password and was too lazy to call the poor ODIN lady and get it set up.

Learned about my project for the summer.
It’s basically a campaign to improve/change the safety messages on Center. I’m pretty stoked. Already coming up with awesome ideas and really looking forward to it.

We then had our pizza dinner and ice breaker, which was “speed connection-making” or something. Basically speed dating. I met some cool people. Awkward small-talk. I hate small talk, but I managed. Learned some majors and projects blah blah.

Tonight, we’re going to get some leftover pizza from Ryan and his roommates (both from Boise State, but the one I met was not excited about BSU football, despite their no3 final ranking last year. Come on, bro! Big Sky represent!). And that’s that.

T-minus 1 day-ish!

Getting everything packed and ready to go for my 8:30am flight tomorrow. I have lots to do and not a lot of time to do it. Have to pack two suitcases (my carry-on and one more checked bag), ship my desktop, and do some cleaning. I’m excited, overwhelmed, and nervous!

my first post!

Here we go!

T-minus 23 days till I get to Hampton.

Current struggles: my computer (read: Photoshop) addiction has me trying to figure out how to get my desktop across the country. Plan as of right now is to ship 3-day via UPS for around $50. Need an external HD ($80-100) in case something goes awry, and a solution to the Monitor Problem; new monitor? old monitor (shipped with system or used as carry-on)?

At work (my regular library job) right now, and I’ve got to leave in…4 minutes. Will update more later.
